After months of hot, sunny, dry weather, the skies have darkened the past week or so and opened up for some torrential rains. Here is an inspiring idea to keep pedestrians dry.

The Lampbrella concept sees a standard-looking street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy and a built-in electric motor which can open or close the umbrella on demand. The umbrella is sensor-activated to offer shelter when it rains.
Most cities are littered with bus shelters which may or may not keep you dry if you get caught out in the rain. But what if they offered something a little more interesting and fun? The Lampbrella is not yet in production, but it would certainly introduce a level of humanity to some city streets.

With a diameter of 2.2m (7′-2″) and an interior height of 2m (6′-5″), there is sufficient shelter space for several people. After three minutes of not being used the canopy is closed.
The Lampbrella, designed by Mikhail Belyaev, is grounded to protect from the threat of lightning strikes and opens at a slow enough speed to eliminate any safety risk and injury to passersby.
Would something like this make you stop and enjoy the rain? Or perhaps just stop to take shelter when you are caught without an umbrella?
